Aszure Barton & Artists: Busk & Blue Soup

East Coast critic Tresca Weinstein wrote something in March of this year worth repeating here: “Every couple of years, I come across a company or a dance that I think of as desert-island fare – something I’d pick to watch over and over if I had to choose just one.”

A Montreal choreographer working in New York, Barton has a riveting way with uninhibited gesture. Her performers dance with their eyes, their toes, their tongues and their little pinky fingers. In Busk, there is a dominant gesture of hands outstretched with thumbs rubbing fingers to ask for money.

Blue Soup is a combining and restructuring of works Barton has created over the last nine years. The mysterious, multi-layered Busk seems to be telling a thrilling, enigmatic story whose details are just out of reach. It’s beautiful and endlessly interesting to watch.
