FLOWER of the SEASON
Body Weather Laboratory and the Electric Lodge are pleased to announce the return of Flower of the Season – an intimate and compelling evening of solo dance by five national and international dancers over two weekends in February. February 19 - 21 and February 26 - 28: Fridays & Saturdays, 8:00 pm, Sundays matinee, 3:00 pm at Electric Lodge, 1416 Electric Avenue in Venice. The program changes nightly, please call the hotline or check the website for details.
Dancers performing their work this season are: Annelien Goetschalckx (Belgium), Eric Losoya (US), Linda Luke (Australia), Kim Nakakura (US), and Cat Westwood (UK). In its fifth season, the series continues to foster a fertile environment for new dance explorations by local and international artists who have been invited to train together at Body Weather Laboratory. Flower of the Season is the unique expression of each solo dancer and the seasonal culmination of their six weeks together under the artistic direction of Oguri and Roxanne Steinberg.
Dance and performance are temporal arts that exist in the present just as the splendor of the flower is fleeting. A flower seeks the light, growing and developing accordingly. It finds the right time and right place to blossom. It shares its beauty as a function of its being, not an arbitrary choice.
Flower of the Season is the extension of the Earthbeat series Oguri and Steinberg began in 1999 to foster collaborations between visual artists, musicians, writers and dancers. The work of percussionist Adam Rudolph, sculptor Stephan Glassman, artist Hirokazu Kosaka, musicians Wadada Leo Smith, G.E. Stinson and Nels Cline and dancers Roxanne Steinberg, Melinda Ring, Mia Doi Todd, Boaz Barkan and Jamie Burris have all been a part of the Flower of the Season and Earthbeat series. Oguri and Steinberg continue to explore the boundaries between audience and stage, creating fresh contexts for the presentation of art and performance.
